Secret Toddler Sleep Solution

Do you have a bedtime routine that works for you and your family?  Or is it always a struggle to get the kids to bed?  Ever since Big C was a baby, we tried to keep a pretty consistent routine.  Over time, and as seasons of life changed, our routine has changed, too.

My husband used to be in charge of bedtime for Big C.  I don’t remember the exact routine anymore, but it was probably something like bath, brush teeth, story and off to bed.  (Sounds like a Daniel Tiger episode, right?)  Then Little M entered the world and changed the whole thing up!  Oh man, that was a very hard change.

Secret Toddler Sleep Solution
Secret Toddler Sleep Solution

Little M has always been a difficult sleeper.  I have read every book and advice out there and tried everything.  I used the tips to create a healthy and safe sleeping environment to help.  But nothing was as easy as putting Big C to bed.  What we implemented are probably things you have tried yourself:

sound machine
darkened room or blackout curtains
comfy mattress
comfortable and light weight pajamas
quiet story time
massage

I could go on and on.  When Little M was an infant, we used the Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleep Suit. This was a God send, because I probably wouldn’t have survived without it.  But eventually, he grew out of it.  We bought a similar suit from the UK, that was more his size.  It was expensive, but it helped him to transition.  We still had to rock him to sleep, though.  As he grew older, he wanted nothing to do with the suit anymore.

He has hit every sleep regression stage you can think of, but we still continued our routine.  Little M is 2 now and sometimes still wakes in the middle of the night.  He always wakes around 4 or 5 in the morning to come and lay with mommy.

Here’s where our accident came in.  Don’t worry, it was a good accident.  And it brought some much needed sleep to our whole family.  Big C needed a body alkaline balance, so I placed both kids in a bath with a cup of Epsom salt and a cup of Apple Cider Vinegar.  That night, Little M woke up around 5am to sleep with mommy, but quickly fell right back to sleep until 7:30 in the morning! This. Never. Happens.

The Secret Toddler Sleep Solution: magnesium from the epsom salts!  Since then, every night we spray Little M’s feet with magnesium oil. And every night since then (knock on wood), he has slept until, at least 6:30am.  I actually have to set my alarm now so Big C gets to school on time. Goodness, I wish I would have figured this trick out a long time ago.  But I’m so grateful we have it now.

When I think back to my pregnancy with Little M, I would spray my legs with magnesium oil before I went to sleep, because of my restless leg syndrome.  So the connection is clearly there.  Even though it was hard for Big C not feeling well, she helped us find a big blessing!

What sleep tips or routines do you use for your kids?

Finding Mommy Time

Big C was such a great sleeper when she was a baby (she still is, usually).  She took two good naps a day without a fuss (most days).  Before she turned one, she was even sleeping through the night from 7am to 7pm.  It was very easy for me to find some much needed mommy time.

That all changed though, once Little M was born.  This boy did not like to sleep unless he was being held in my arms.  Nap times were no longer my time.  It consisted of me holding him on the couch with a pillow propped under my arm.  We would stay like this for up to two hours.  If I even tried to lay him in his crib, he would wake within 10 minutes each time.  I was lucky to even get a shower in some days.  They were always rushed and unenjoyable, anyway.

Nap time

We eventually worked through many of the sleep issues (we still have some) and that has given me time to get stuff done around the house.  But that didn’t solve the issue of him always wanting to be held.  Until recently, he has been glued to my hip where ever we go.  Eventually, I couldn’t hold him any longer, so we spent a lot of time snuggling on the couch watching cartoons.  Between driving Big C back and forth to school, and sitting on the couch, my weight began creeping up on me and I was starting to feel very fatigued and unhappy with myself.

That all changed a few months ago.  Despite being on a tight budget, I needed to do something.  I decided to join the local YMCA.  After Little M and I drop Big C off at school, we head to the gym. Little M gets to play in the nursery while mommy works out.  It has made a huge difference for the both of us.  Not only do I feel more energized and healthy, but Little M gets to be a toddler and discover the world.  I’m so thankful for this mommy me time.

How do you fit in mommy time?

Night Night Mommy and Night Night Daddy Children’s Book + Giveaway

Disclosure: I wrote this post on behalf of Tommy Nelson and received promotional items to thank me for my time.  All opinions regarding Tommy Nelson and the children’s books are my own and were not influenced by other sources.

Because my husband works from home and I get to be a stay-at-home mommy, we spend a great deal of time making memories with our children.  I consider this a huge blessing for our family.  One memory maker, that I hope lasts a long time, is story time.  We like to snuggle up close before bed and read books.  My kids have most of them memorized and sometimes read along with me.

Usually, our story time occurs right before bed, as part of our bedtime routine. My children love books of all kinds, but many of my favorites consists of calming them down before bed.  The books, Night Night Mommy and Night Night Daddy are two fun books that do just that.

With Mother’s and Father’s Day just around the corner, these precious rhyming books help remind us of the memories we share with our little ones.  So snuggle up close with your sweet blessings and enjoy these beautifully illustrated board books with your young ones.  You can purchase Night Night Mommy or Night Night Daddy for $9.99 each.

Tommy Nelson is offering you a chance to win both copies.  Simply use the Rafflecopter form below to enter.  Stay connected with Tommy Nelson on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest for all their latest products and discounts.  This giveaway is open to US residents only.

Preschool Easter Lessons and Activities

I’ve always loved Easter since I was little girl.  It’s the one season that reminds me of Jesus’ undeniable love for us.  No matter what we’ve been through, he’s been through it, too.  He will never forsake us.  This is a lesson I want my children to understand at an early age.

I found a couple of great, hands-on lessons to help Big C get a deeper understanding of who Jesus really is to us.  These lessons were something I had never tried before.  So I had no idea if they would work. The first one was the resurrection garden.
The first step to our resurrection garden was collecting materials.  I tried to use what we already had without spending any money.

Planter for garden – we used an old one from our front porch.
Terricotta Pot for tomb – we used the one from Big C’s Veggie Tales Birthday Party Activity.
Potting Soil all throughout the garden – my husband had some in the garage.
Rocks for tomb and garden – found in backyard.
Sticks and yarn for the cross – scavenger hunt at the neighborhood playground.
Grass Seed – our kind neighbor gave us a few scoops.

It took a long time for the grass to grow and we thought for sure it was never going to happen.  But we continued to water the garden each day and give it sunlight.  On Good Friday, we saw tiny grass peaking through the soil.  And when we went to move the stone from the tomb on Easter, grass was everywhere!

Resurrection Garden for Kids
For our second Easter lesson, we made resurrection rolls.  We only had mini marshmallows left over from our Disney Junior Spring Break Playdate, so I found a great recipe and lesson to follow from Jen at 4tunate.net.  We read from the Bible as we made our rolls.  Big C did an awesome job!  Bonus, they were so yummy!
Big C also had a great time using her creative skills with Easter Eggs.  I found a kit that had a ton of different ways to color and decorate the eggs.  Her eggs turn out more beautiful every year!
What are your favorite ways to explain Jesus’ love to your children?
