Prewriting Activities for Preschoolers

My favorite experiences with my children is watching them learn and accomplish new skills.  It amazes me at what they can do, especially because of early challenges they had to overcome.  And I am so blessed that I can stay home with my children and be able to watch them learn first hand.

Big C will be entering preschool in the Fall.  What?  I know, this happened in a blink of an eye.  She is such a smart little cookie who catches on so quickly.  I try to expose her to new learning experiences everyday and then I let her lead.

Big C loves to draw, color and paint.  At this age, she isn’t holding her crayons correctly.  And that’s okay.  Just like everything else, I show her once.  If she wants to do it, great!  But I never like to push it.  I did, however, pull out my preschool prewriting skills tool box and we had a blast!

You can find all sorts of prewriting activities on Pinterest.  These are activities that help your child strengthen their hands and fingers, so when it comes time to learn how to write, it’s enjoyable for them and hopefully not a fight.

Here are just a few of the activities I have in my tool box.  All of these items are inexpensive or you may be able to find them in your home.

Supplies Needed:
ice cube tray

Use the tweezers to pick up beads and sort by color into the ice cube tray.

Supplies Needed:
string or yarn

Tie a knot at the end of string and allow child to string the beads.  Try creating a pattern.

Supplies Needed:
flat tray or baking sheet
shaving cream

Rub a thin layer of shaving cream on tray and allow child to make letters or designs with fingers.

Big C loves to write her name.  I’ve showed her other letters, but her interest isn’t there yet.  So, I’ll give her some time and try again in the future.

What prewriting activities have you tried with your child?

Finding Healing After My C-section {Part Two}

It’s been over three months since I wrote about the pain from my c-section.  And sadly, I’m still in pain. I’ve tried everything natural for healing.  I’ve done ultrasound, laser and massage therapy.  None of these were long lasting.  The one thing that brought the most relief was a machine called Avazzia.

I was able to use the Avazzia machine at home for over two weeks, 2 – 3 times a day.  But once I returned the machine, the pain slowly returned.  I feel like I exhausted all my options.  So, next week, I’m scheduled for laparoscopic surgery.

I’ve been trying not to think about it, because it makes me very anxious.  I’m afraid I’m going to come out worse then before or that it won’t help at all.  I’m afraid that I’ll be wasting money and my family’s time. And then this makes me feel guilty.  Because I know that fear is the opposite of trusting God.  And all I want to do is completely trust Him with my life.

Before my pre-op appointment, I read a quote from Lysa TerKeurst.  And it was exactly what I needed to read.

Living in fear of what might be causes more anxiety than actually facing what I fear.

I’m praying for peace to and through this surgery.  And I’m lifting up the doctor, that God guides his hands to healing!

Trying to Conceive?

Disclosure: I wrote this post on behalf of Astroglide TTC and received compensation as a thank you for my time.  All opinions regarding Astroglide TTC are my own and were not influenced by other sources.

Becoming a parent is one of the greatest joys I have experienced in my life.  The first time they placed my babies in my arms evoked a feeling I could never describe.  To know that I helped create and nurture these beautiful beings inside of me, and then I got to meet them face to face, was crazy to me.

The emotions leading up to the birth of my babies weren’t always filled with such joy.  Big C’s conception was a surprise to me.  In fact, I was in complete shock and scared when I read the positive pregnancy test.  Becoming a parent wasn’t even on my radar.

I certainly lacked all confidence in being a mom.  And I wasn’t ready.  My husband was in Iraq when I told him the big news.  He was as surprised as much as I was, but he showed more happiness then I could muster.

Here I was, afraid to be a mom, when all around me were spouses who have been praying for a child of their own.  There was no way I could understand their struggle, pain or sadness.  They were trying everything they knew to conceive.  I finally began to realize that this was a huge blessing and my love for my baby was more than I could ever imagine.

I recently learned of a product called Astroglide TTC Trying to Conceive, a sperm friendly lubricant that doesn’t impede sperm like traditional lubricants.

Astroglide TTC knows it’s important to create an environment where sperm has a chance of survival when trying to conceive.  While traditional lubricants may inhibit sperm motility, studies have shown that Astroglide TTC allows sperm to move freely.  It’s a formula with adjusted pH levels, compatible osmolality and a consistency of egg white cervical mucus.  It also contains galactose, naturally found in semen.  Fructose is another ingredient, which is the main source of energy for sperm.  And like all Astroglide products, TTC also relieves vaginal dryness during sexual activity.

TTC comes in pre-filled applicators so it’s easy to use and less messy, without the hassle of filling it yourself.  Astroglide TTC has a retail price of $12.99, a great value compared to any competitor, and can be purchased at a variety of locations!  For more information regarding Astroglide TTC, fertility support and where to buy, visit TTC homepage.  Stay connected with Astroglide TTC on Facebook and Pinterest.

VTech’s Flipsies Inspires Girls to Dream Big + Giveaway

Disclosure:  I wrote this post on behalf of VTech and received a promotional item to thank me for my time.  All views and opinions regarding VTech and Flipsies are my own and were not influenced by other sources.

If you ask Big C what’s she wants to be when she grows up, she’ll either say, “a dark blue sparkly mermaid” or “EVERYTHING!”  She takes great pleasure in dressing up and pretending.  Her imagination is beyond anything I’ve ever seen.  And I love every bit of it!

Big C had the opportunity to sample VTech’s new Flipsies, an innovative play experience offering an empowering message for girls.  Flipsies delivers an awesome play experience by combining traditional role play with collectable dolls and interactive technology.

There are eight themes that offer aspirational messages by encouraging girls that they can be anything they want to be.  These themes include doctor, marine biologist, teacher, baker, rockstar, veterinarian, fashion designer and even princess.  Each play set offers real life and dream world modes.

Big C received Sandy and the House and Ocean Cruiser.  Sandy’s 2-in-1 magic house transforms into an interactive luxury ocean cruiser.  Sandy loves all water activities including swimming, diving, surfing, boating, scuba diving, and jet skiing.  Her adventurous and courageous personality (which reminds me of Big C’s) helps her live out her dream of being a marine biologist.

My daughter has spent hours playing with her new Flipsies.  Sometimes she plays by herself or she wants me (and even her baby brother) to join in.  Because Big C enjoys dressing up herself, she is having fun changing Sandy’s outfits and accessories for even more imaginative play.

Starting July 15th, Flipsies is available for a limited time exclusively at Denver area Walmart Stores. The new Flipsies collection launches with 10 playsets ranging from $14.99 to $39.99 and eight dolls at $9.99 each.  Flipsies are available for pre-sale on Amazon.com.  For more information on VTech and their product lines, visit their website and follow VTech on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

Photography Challenge {Day Three}

Today’s challenge was Macro Photography.  I learned what setting on my camera is perfect for those very close up shots of small objects.  It was definitely the perfect day for this challenge.  It had just rained.  And though the sun was peeking out, it was still a bit overcast.

I don’t have any special lenses or tools for my camera, so I just tried to focus myself.  This was kind of tricky, because my camera was trying to focus in on a different area then I wanted.  But here is my favorite shot.  I’m in love with the little drops of rain.  I really wanted to get a close up of the drops, but I couldn’t figure out how to get any closer.

Here are a couple of other shots I captured, but they didn’t turn out the best.  I also wanted to find a bug, but I guess they were hiding out of the rain.

I don’t know why, but I’m not a flowery type person.  These types of photos usually aren’t my favorite to look at.  I know it’s only day 3, but this is definitely my favorite challenge so far.  These three pictures show just a bit of God’s beauty, right outside my front door.

What are your favorite types of photos to look at?

Photography Challenge {Day Two}

It’s day two of the photography challenge.  Yesterday, I used my real camera for the first challenge. But today was all about using your phone.  The tips I took away from this challenge was the use of good lighting, the rule of thirds, and perspective.

The theme I was going for was summer.  As I look at this, I can see a million things I want to fix. But that’s why I did the challenge, to learn how to improve.  So I’m not going to beat myself up over this one.  Ha!
What has been your favorite part of this summer?

Photography Challenge {Day One}

I recently bought a “real” camera with my savings.  I want to capture memorable moments with my family, but I also enjoy trying to better myself as a blogger.  Yesterday, I started a photography challenge to try and learn more about my new camera.

Day one’s photography challenge was photo composition.  (By the way, I’m a day behind on the challenge, but I’m determined to conquer it!)  In this photo, I tried to use the rule of thirds.  I’m not sure how well I did, but it was fun trying out this challenge.  Of course my favorite subjects are my children, so here is Big C posing for me.

So what is Big C really doing in this photo?  She was chomping down on chips.  I had to share some outtakes, because they are pretty silly.

What are your favorite photo tips?

I’m Getting Old{er}

It’s been about 16 years since I graduated high school.  But to me, it doesn’t feel that long ago.  This past week, I turned 35.  That’s just 5 years away from 40.  How did that happen?  Where has the time gone?  As I get older, the years seem to go by faster.

Despite the fact that I am getting old(er).  I had a wonderful birthday and feel very blessed.  The kids and I took a little trip to see my parents.  Then this past weekend, we picked out and delved into my traditional ice cream cake.

And for the first time since grade school, I painted a portrait at a place called Painting with a Twist.  I had a blast and can’t wait to do it again! Not bad for the first time, right?

How do you enjoy spending your birthday?
