Green Your Mom

Making Friends

Growing up, I had the same friends throughout grade school and high school.  So I never had to put in much effort to make new ones.  It usually just happened naturally.  But once I went off to college, my friend making skills were lacking.  Though God blessed me with awesome friends throughout college, I learned a lot in the process.

My Life Long Friends

Since Baby C was born (less than a year and a half ago), we have moved 3 times.  One of those times being across country.  At first, that move was very difficult for me.  We left our family and friends and moved to a city where we knew no one.  I began to get very homesick and felt like I was just going through the motions, day by day.  And I hated living life that way.
Even though I was apart of a mommy group and attended other mommy and baby classes, I continued to put a wall up and never make any real friend connections.  I knew I should reach out for friendship, but I was too scared.  I was scared to be rejected or not cool enough for the other mommies.  I was scared to say the wrong thing, afraid I might offend someone.  I was scared to open up and let them get to know me.

I began praying for God’s guidance and asking for just one good friend.  That’s all I needed. God brought me that friend a couple months later.  I met another mommy who lived down the street and happened to have a daughter the same age as Baby C.  We began going to classes together and slowly getting to know one another.

But then my husband and I had to make a quick decision in order to make a better life for our family in the future.  Our tenants who lived in our condo, about an hour away, were moving out.  We had to decide if we wanted to move into a smaller place (without many of the perks we had) to save money, or to find new tenants.  We decided to move back in.

So I left my new friend behind.  My heart yearns for friendship, but continues to build a wall.  I reach out for the sake of Baby C and I to have social time, but I don’t get too close, because I know we’ll be leaving again.

Do you have an easy time making friends?  Or are you like me, holding back and afraid to let anyone too close?

Copy-Kids {Review and Giveaway}

Every morning, Baby C is at my feet begging for food as I prepare her breakfast, but by the time dinner rolls around, food is being thrown on the floor, because she could care less about eating.  At times, Baby C can be pretty picky, too.  One day she loves bananas and the next, she wants nothing to do with them.

This week, I received the award winning Copy-Kids DVD in the mail for Baby C to check out.  Copy-Kids is a great tool for parents to help get their children to eat fruits and veggies, by watching and copying other kids.  The super cute children in the DVD range from 6 months to 5 years old.  It is divided into 12 segments, one for each fruit and vegetable.  It also includes an interview with pediatrician, Dr. Jay Gordon, who discusses healthy eating for kids.  Check out the trailer to get a little sample.

Copy-Kids has won two children’s excellence awards, one from Dr. Toy and the other from MACT.  Copy-Kids was approved by the USDA and was added to their Education and Training materials database for preschool nutrition.

This morning, instead of Baby C begging at my feet for food, I quickly chopped up some bananas and popped in the Copy-Kids DVD on the chapter conveniently titled, Bananas.  Her precious face was priceless.  She even giggled as she watched.  She quickly turned to her bananas and began eating along with the Copy-Kids. I’m excited to try out the other fruits and veggies too.

Get connected with Copy-Kids on Facebook and Twitter!  Ready to help your child experience the joys of eating fruits and veggies?  Copy-Kids is giving a copy away to one of my Sweet Tiny Blessings’ readers.  Simply fill out the Rafflecopter form below.  There are no mandatory entries, however, the more you complete, the better your chances of winning.  Good luck!

Mother Teresa’s Prayer {Celebrating Lent}

As I was scrolling through my Facebook friends’ status updates, I came across words I needed to hear.  I let my former classmate know how much I appreciated those words, and she reminded me that our 8th grade teacher often spoke them.  Maybe you need to hear them too?

People are often unreasonable, irrational and self-centered.  Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.  Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and genuine enemies.  Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you.  Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight.  Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous.  Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten.  Do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough.  Give your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God.  It was never between you and them anyway.
~Found written on the wall in Mother Teresa’s home for children in Calcutta

Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil {Review and Giveaway}

I’ve heard so much great praises about Tropical Traditions (and all it’s wonderful benefits) in the blogosphere, that I wanted to try it out for myself.  I received a sample of the Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil and fell in love with it right away.

There are so many great uses for coconut oil, including cooking, hair and skin care.  My skin is very dry, and Colorado’s dry climate doesn’t help.  This week, after showering, I used the coconut oil on my face and body, instead of lotion.  The difference, for me, was incredible.  It left my skin hydrated throughout the day, without a greasy residue.  I love that the scent is light and not overbearing, like many lotions can be.

Learn about the hundreds of ways you can use coconut oil by viewing the video below.

Want to try out the coconut oil for yourself?  Tropical Traditions is giving away a quart of Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil to one of my Sweet Tiny Blessings’ readers!  Simply fill out the Rafflecopter form below to enter!
Disclaimer: Tropical Traditions provided me with a free sample of this product to review, and I was under no obligation to review it if I so chose.  Nor was I under any obligation to write a positive review or sponsor a product giveaway in return for the free product.

Lucky Clover {St. Patrick’s Day Event} Review and Giveaway

Welcome to the Saint Patrick’s Lucky Clover Event! Together with Anderson’s Angels and Joy Of Momma Joyner, I am excited to be a part of a fun blog hop with a total of 30 bloggers! Each prize/package is valued at $25 or more! So try your luck at all of the 30 blogs!  Feeling really lucky?  Click here to enter the cash prize giveaway.

Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, as he was the one who brought christianity to the Irish.  According to legend, Saint Patrick used a shamrock to explain about God.  The shamrock, which looks like a clover, has three leaves on each stem.  Saint Patrick told the people that the shamrock was like the idea of the Trinity – that in one God, there are three devine beings: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

I received a beautiful, green, beaded bracelet from Jesse Anne Designs.  The bracelet is so classy and elegant, yet makes any casual outfit pop.  With the three, green beads, it reminds me of St. Patrick and his teaching of the Trinity.  And what a great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with this beautiful piece valued at $29!

I am so blessed to have Jesse Anne Designs sponsoring the Lucky Clover Giveaway.  Jesse is a beautiful artist who creates jewelry that is very personal to her.  She often puts classic lyrics and literature into her art.  Jesse also loves making custom and personal items for people.  What I love about Jesse, is that she gives back to the community in a special way, by auctioning off her beautiful jewelry to benefit Honor Flight.  Honor Flight’s goal is to help every veteran in America to visit their memorial.  Be sure to check out the Honor Flight’s Blog to purchase gift cards from Jesse Anne Designs Etsy Shop at half price!

With the excitement of St. Patrick’s Day and the Lucky Clover Giveaway, Jesse Anne Designs is giving away a “Lucky” necklace to one of my blessed readers!

The Doubtful Pixie Handmade {Giveaway}

Not too long ago, I was in search of someone to create a blog button for me.  Sabrina, from The Doubtful Pixie, graciously stepped in and offered to create one.  She was so patient and gave me easy, step-by-step directions to follow.  Check out that beautiful blog button in the right-hand sidebar.  I was so thankful that Sabrina took time out of her life to help a total stranger, that I wanted to repay her.

Today, I’m featuring Sabrina and all her handmade, creative goodness!  Sabrina is a 31-year-old artist, living in Northern Oregon with her husband, Kris, who is an artist, as well.  Kris has been a positive influence on Sabrina.  Before they became a couple, Sabrina began to lose sight of her creative side.  Her husband introduced her to Etsy and it reminded her of when her mom sold collectables on Ebay.  She knew if her mom could do it, she could too.  Sabrina admits that she has made some mistakes (haven’t we all, when it comes to new adventures?) but she is growing her shop one step at a time.  For now, Etsy is more of a hobby for Sabrina, but she hopes that one day it will grow into a business.
The Doubtful Pixie features items from wall decor to invitations.  And she is giving away some of her handmade work to one of my Sweet Tiny Blessings’ readers.  This giveaway package includes 4 blank mini notecards, a crocheted-appliqued pot holder and an embroidered wall art hoop.

Do you love The Doubtful Pixie’s whimsical and girly style?  Then be sure to check out her {Etsy Shop}.  Want to learn more about The Doubtful Pixie?  Connect with her on her {Blog}, {Facebook} and {Twitter}.

Picking A Pediatrician

I have a love/hate relationship with doctors.  Does anyone else feel the same way?  I love them when they provide great care and sound advice or help to heal my baby girl, but hate when they don’t listen and misdiagnose.  And it’s always so hard to find a good great doctor.  Especially when you are searching for a pediatrician.

We moved again, a couple weeks ago.  So I had to find a pediatrician for Baby C.  It’s always a struggle when you don’t know anyone to get recommendations from.  Last time, I searched the web and was blessed to find a perfect fit.  This time, not so much.

As we entered the quiet lobby, I was impressed by how beautifully painted and child friendly it was.  The receptionist was friendly, too (that’s always a big plus).  Then it went down hill from there.  The nurse wasn’t very personable and made Baby C and I a bit uncomfortable.  And when the doctor walked in to examine Baby C, she never washed her hands.

She proceeded by asking questions and background information.  When she asked, “has Baby C ever been hospitalized?”  I was ticked to say the least.  And I asked if her previous doctor sent her prior records.  “Oh yes, I just haven’t had the time to review them,” she replied.  Remember when I said I walked into a quiet office?  Why wouldn’t she have time?  And isn’t it normal practice to review your patient’s records before examining them?

So, here I was with tears in my eyes, explaining reliving the hardest days of my life, as the the doctor’s mouth dropped in disbelief.  “How rare,” is all she could say.  I knew then and there that she just wasn’t the right doctor for us.

As I shared my concern that I didn’t think Baby C was getting enough milk and asked for her help, the best advice she could offer was to add a little chocolate syrup to her cup.  Really?  That’s all you got?  And then, in two years, we can discuss her rotting teeth and obesity?

And to top it all off, I had to remind the friendly receptionist to take my insurance card.  That’s part of her job, right?

Has anyone else had a similar or bad experience searching for the right pediatrician?  Any tips on finding a perfect match?

(Sorry for the moodiness and sarcasm today.  It’s just been one of those weeks.)

A Prayer for Illness {Celebrating Lent}

Whether you know someone who is ill or you’re going through an illness yourself, it can suck the life out of you.  It can be heartbreaking and devastating.  But I know for a fact that God can work miracles and heal even those on their death bed.

At just 3 weeks old, Baby C battled through Bacterial Spinal Meningitis from Salmonella.  Many children have lost their lives, limbs and/or hearing and significant delays in development to this awful sickness.  Baby C pulled through by the healing powers of God.

Today, I ask God to comfort all those who are suffering from an illness.  Whether it be physically, mentally or emotionally.  May God bring them the people they need in their lives to support them, comfort them, cry with them, and laugh with them.  May they be strengthened by God’s healing power.  And may they know that miracles do happen.

5But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5
We can’t explain illness and suffering.  Jesus tried to end it where He could.  And at the end of His life, he took it on himself.  He taught us not to give in, but to fight for our health.  He taught us that sickness can be blessings in disguise.  It reminds us to depend on God.  It reminds us how precious life is.  And it reminds us to accept God and His ways, knowing that whatever lies ahead, it will be okay.

God of healing, God of hope, God of
love, heal me as you will and give me hope.
You meet me in all my weaknesses and broken
places.  Those are the spots where I am
Most vulnerable, least able to defend or protect
myself.  Yet that’s where you find entry.
Help me to know your wholeness and power
and love there.  Let me realize that you are
there waiting for me.  May my helplessness
challenge me to find strength and healing in
